Which profile is right for you?

Choosing a profile for your solid wood flooring is simple and will usually come down to the preference of the person laying your floor. T&G and Square Edge are aesthetically the same once laid. However, there are differences to be considered. If you want our advice, just ask, but hopefully the below offers a good insight.

Tongue & Groove
There are certain scenarios where T&G is necessary for fire regulations on new builds, but check this with your building control officer first. We’ve found too that most carpenters and floor layers prefer T&G.

Square edge
Square edge boards are usually chosen as a more traditional method of floor laying and are perfect for listed homes, where floors need to be matched like for like. Square edged boards are easier to take up in the future, so if you have any areas of flooring that need electrical access, square edge is worth considering. The ends of the boards are aesthetically more pleasing than T&G, so if you have a design that allows the ends of the boards to be exposed, square edge is usually preferred.
