Our second visit to Figtree Farm, to see our much-loved Heritage Oak flooring in Jess and James’s sitting room.
Jess and James of Figtree Farm chose our mixed-width Heritage Oak flooring, with boards up to 300mm wide, for the sitting room of their Devon farmhouse. It follows the Heritage Oak they laid in their kitchen. They wanted a British-grown, sustainably sourced floor with the character of reclaimed boards, tough enough for two young sons.

The sitting room at Figtree Farm
At the heart of their farmhouse, Jess and James have created a living space that balances family life with timeless style, with our oak grounding the sitting room in natural beauty.
Many people already know the house through Jess’s Instagram account, @figtreefarm, and we have previously featured their kitchen renovation. With two young sons, Jess and James know how important it is to choose materials that look beautiful and can cope with the joyful chaos of family life.
Mixed-width boards up to 300mm
The sitting room uses our mixed-width Heritage Oak flooring, with boards up to 300mm wide. The varied plank widths echo the rhythm of traditional wood floors and suit the historic character of the farmhouse, adding interest while keeping an authentic feel.
A floor for two active boys
For Jess and James, choosing the right floor was about more than looks. With two active boys, they wanted a floor that would build up its own character over time through the natural wear of family life. Our British Heritage Oak gives them that: a durable but warm surface for both quiet moments and energetic play.
Grown and made in Britain
Part of Heritage Oak’s appeal is its provenance. Each board is sourced and made in Britain, which gives a connection to the local landscape that matters to this farming family. The mixed widths create a subtle rhythm across the room that suits both the farmhouse’s original features and their furnishings.
As their children grow, the floor will develop the rich patina that only comes with time and use. For Jess and James, this was about investing in a floor that would grow with their family.
Sustainably sourced British oak
The sustainability of our British Heritage Oak was another key factor. Every board is sourced from carefully managed British woodlands, where responsible forestry keeps native forests healthy for future generations. That fitted their values as a family.
The look of reclaimed, without the uncertainty
Jess and James were first drawn to reclaimed flooring. They found that our British Heritage Oak gave them the same depth of character without the uncertainties that often come with salvaged materials. The natural variation in the grain gives all the charm of a historic floor, while precise manufacturing means consistent quality and easier installation.
Choosing British-made flooring was partly about supporting local craftsmanship, but also about reducing the environmental impact of their renovation. With the timber grown and milled in Britain, the journey from forest to farmhouse was kept short.

Frequently asked questions
How wide are Heritage Oak boards?
In this sitting room, Jess and James chose our Heritage Oak in mixed widths, with boards up to 300mm wide. Mixed widths give a varied, traditional look that suits period homes.
Is Heritage Oak a good alternative to reclaimed flooring?
For Jess and James it was. They were first drawn to reclaimed boards, but found Heritage Oak gave the same depth of character without the uncertainties of salvaged timber, with consistent quality and easier installation.
Is oak flooring practical with young children?
Jess and James have two young sons and wanted a floor that would wear in naturally rather than look damaged. Oak is durable and develops a patina over time, which suits busy family homes.
Where does your Heritage Oak come from?
Our Heritage Oak is British, sourced from carefully managed British woodlands and milled in Britain, which keeps its journey to your home short.
Can I use the same floor in more than one room?
