Nicky and David Stewart-Smith open the door of their Somerset holiday cottage. They’ve renovated the cottage as well as their adjoining home to fit seamlessly into the beautiful nature around. David owns and runs a local building business, Exmoor Builders and laid the natural wood flooring they chose from us.

Steeped in a history dating back at least 300 years, these cottages were originally built for farm workers and were part of the Carnarvon Estate. The original staircase greets you on entry to the cottage with beautiful wooden treads complimenting the natural wood flooring that is laid across the rest of the property. In the sitting room you can find a log burner flickering – the perfect place to rest your feet after some long countryside walks across Exmoor.
The log burner, the natural focal point of the room, offers a warm glimmering light across our wide plank flooring, dancing across the characterful cats paws and medullary rays that you find so often in British wood flooring.
Provenance and beauty were key factors in choosing their British wood flooring, but foremost the wood needed to be as durable as it was beautiful. Being a cottage retreat in an area famous for its country walks, it was vital for David & Nicki to choose a hard-wearing, easily maintained natural wood flooring. British Oak felt the natural choice being renowned for it’s longevity and hard-wearing properties.
A huge plus point to this cottage retreat is that your pooch is allowed to enjoy the holiday too. Therefore, a floor that didn’t mark with muddy paw prints was first on the list of priorities. With our natural wood flooring the couple could rest assured that they were installing a floor that would last for generations to come, giving a durable finish.
Dogs won’t be the only guests strutting across our solid wood flooring at Brushford cottages, the floors also get admired by Nicky & David’s poultry, in particular, Charlie their Sebright Bantam. Although Charlie will (hopefully) leave less marks across our wood flooring than a canine alternative, it was still super important to have a natural wood flooring which he was able to admire and fluff his feathers on. Charlie shouldn’t join you on your stay in the cottage, but for our photoshoot, he was centre of attention.
When it comes to resting your head on your weekend retreat, the master bedroom with ensuite lead you to the perfect slumber. Adorned with natural materials throughout both rooms, our sustainable wood flooring keeps your feet warm as you walk from shower to bed. Nicky and her daughter Dora are both trained in the world of textiles and it doesn’t go unnoticed. Sheepskin rugs and wool blankets are a nod to nature as you rest your head upon the pillow.
With creative minds in the family, together they’ve curated the perfect imaginative space where you can spend some time writing, reading, or painting. Hopefully you won’t be working when you’re away, but we know it’s always useful to have a place to write a quick email too!
Our wide plank flooring leads you from the bedroom across into this home office/ creative studio where you can spend some time getting inspired by nature. A beautiful light floods through the window from the garden below and gives a warm glow to the flooring underfoot, giving you a sense of the wildlife that surrounds.
Selecting wide plank wood flooring has returned some of the rich history back to this cottage, as this would have been the traditional choice in a period property such as this one – and what better way than for the owner of the cottage to install the flooring himself.
