Josh Widdicombe and Rose Hanson celebrate the gorgeous honey tones of our Classic Oak flooring in their Cornish holiday home- celebrating the best of British.
Welcome to Moorlands, Mullion. When comedian Josh Widdicombe and his wife Rose Hanson set out to transform their Cornish second home, they had a clear vision: create a space that would serve as the perfect family retreat whilst showcasing Rose’s exceptional eye for interior design. The result is a stunning property (available to rent here) that seamlessly blends functionality with sophisticated style, anchored by our beautiful British Oak flooring that reflects their commitment to quality, sustainability, and local craftsmanship.
Rose Hanson’s passion for interiors has always been evident, but her work on the family’s Cornwall home truly showcased her talent for creating spaces that are both beautiful and liveable. This project served as a precursor to her later ventures with interior design company Penrose Tilbury, which she founded with her friend Charlie Tilbury. Together, they now design homes across the UK with a particular focus on the South West, bringing their signature blend of contemporary style and traditional craftsmanship to properties throughout the region.

Central to the transformation of Moorlands, Mullion was the selection of our Coppice & Crown solid wood flooring that would provide both durability and aesthetic appeal. Rose was passionate about using local materials wherever possible, with a particular emphasis on long-lasting materials made, or in our case, grown, in Britain. This philosophy led the couple to choose our Classic Oak flooring – a decision that perfectly aligned with their values of sustainability and quality.
British oak has been the flooring of choice for discerning homeowners for centuries, and for good reason. With young children in the family, Rose & Josh needed flooring that could withstand the demands of family life whilst maintaining its beauty. British hardwood flooring offers exceptional durability, capable of handling everything from muddy wellies after Cornish cliff walks to the daily wear and tear of an active household.

The natural grain patterns and rich honey tones of British oak create a warm, inviting atmosphere that complements Cornwall’s coastal light beautifully. The Classic Oak flooring was chosen in our mixed width set, allowing for the gorgeously wide planks to make an impact through the space. They chose to finish the boards with Bona Mega Matte floor finish to get a lighter wash over the oak boards, perfect for a Cornish retreat.
The main living area features our Classic Oak flooring in mixed width planks that create a sense of grandeur with the widest widths included, whilst remaining practical for family use. The flooring’s natural variations and characteristic medullary rays catch the changing Cornish light throughout the day, creating a dynamic backdrop for family gatherings. Rose’s design incorporates comfortable seating areas where the family can unwind when visiting Cornwall whilst also providing space for the children to play safely. The oak flooring’s natural warmth underfoot makes it particularly suitable for Cornwall’s occasionally chilly evenings. Our solid oak flooring has been combined with underfloor heating throughout the kitchen and the sitting room, giving an ongoing warm heat to the colder winter months.

The kitchen area showcases how solid oak flooring can handle the demands of a busy family kitchen whilst maintaining its sophisticated appearance. The flooring is paired with a Devol kitchen and wall colours from Edward Bulmer. The dining area flows seamlessly from the kitchen, with the continuous oak flooring creating visual cohesion. Large windows overlooking the Cornish countryside flood the space with natural light, highlighting the beautiful grain patterns and creating an inviting atmosphere for family meals and entertaining guests.
The success of the family’s Cornwall home renovation directly influenced Rose’s decision to establish Penrose Tilbury with her friend Charlie. The project demonstrated her ability to balance practical family needs with sophisticated design sensibilities – skills that have made the company highly sought after across the South West.Penrose Tilbury’s approach mirrors the philosophy Rose applied to her own home: respecting local materials and traditional craftsmanship whilst incorporating contemporary comforts and functionality. Their projects feature British wood flooring as a foundational element, recognising its ability to provide both visual continuity and practical durability.
