At Coppice & Crown, we celebrate wood in its natural form — full of character, variation, and quiet strength. That’s why we always recommend mixed length flooring.
Not only does it honour the tree, but it also delivers a more honest, sustainable, and visually harmonious result underfoot.
Natural Variation of Mixed Length Flooring
Each British tree we mill is unique — shaped by decades of wind, rain, and soil. Mixed lengths allow us to use more of each log, reducing waste and maximising the yield from every precious British-grown tree. That’s fundamental to our commitment to sustainable forestry and our Grown in Britain certification.

Wider Boards Benefit from Mixed Length Flooring
Our boards are up to 350mm wide — more than double the industry standard. At that width, it’s natural (and often essential) to work with a variety of lengths to keep things stable, strong and visually balanced.
Long, wide boards can be heavy, tricky to fit, and prone to natural movement. By mixing lengths across the floor, you break up tension and improve the structure — especially over underfloor heating.
Mixed Lengths Enhance the Look and Feel
Wood is a natural material, and part of its beauty lies in the subtle variation from board to board — in tone, grain, and length. A floor made from all one length can feel artificial, almost laminate-like. Mixed lengths, on the other hand, create a more natural flow — a quiet rhythm that feels timeless, not uniform. You’ll see the floor as a whole, not a repeat pattern.

More Efficient for Installers, Less Waste On Site
Mixed length flooring packs allow your fitter to:
Use shorter boards near walls or thresholds
Minimise cuts and offcuts
Create staggered joins for better strength and movement tolerance
It’s a win-win: less waste, better installation, and a finish that’s as functional as it is beautiful.
In summary...
Mixed lengths aren’t a compromise — they’re a reflection of our values. Of working with the wood, not against it. Of letting nature lead the design, and building something that will last for generations.
